The Compassionate Care Course informs, nurtures, and demonstrates how inherent personal qualities and accumulated life skills/experience can be used in helpful ways. This 8 week (20 hr) educational program which runs twice per year in Winnipeg, is valuable not only to volunteers but to all caregivers in the community. Program goals include exploring personal attitudes to dying and death, deepening self awareness, enhancing interpersonal skills, learning more about dying, grieving and the role of the hospice volunteer. The course is taught by palliative care professionals representing chaplaincy, nursing, medicine, social work, and volunteer management, and is approved as a 20-hr elective credit, U of M Applied Counseling Certificate Program.
