Dr. Cornelius Woelk Take a Bow!

Dr. Cornelius Woelk
Manitoba Physician of the Year
The Fort Garry Hotel, Winnipeg, Manitoba
May 12, 2010

For significant contribution to the practice of medicine and/or to the community by a member of Doctors Manitoba.

Dr. Cornelius Woelk is an ideal Physician of the Year candidate for the same reasons he received the 2009 Award of Excellence from the Manitoba College of Family Physicians.

Detailed letters of support came from Dr. Woelk's medical and administrative colleagues at the CW Wiebe Medical Centre in Winkler, nurses and program directors in palliative care and primary care oncology, patients, and members of the clergy, community and government.  They attest to his clinical skills, empathy, compassion and extraordinary devotion to his patients.  As one puts it, Dr. Woelk's knowledge is vast and his kindness deep.  It extends to patients who are receiving palliative care at home, giving their families the support and resources to make that possible.

As part of his busy family practice, Dr. Woelk provides a full range of hospital inpatient care at Boundary Trails Health Centre.  He is also Central RHA Medical Director of Palliative Care, and has provided outstanding leadership to CancerCare Manitoba's Community Cancer Program Network.  He has sat on many CancerCare committees and presented at medical oncology and primary care CME events.  He has also been a pioneer in the full use and implementation of electronic medical records for cancer care.

Dr. Woelk is Assistant Professor in the University of Manitoba Department of Family Medicine, and serves on the College of Family Physicians of Canada Palliative Care Committee  His generosity of spirit extends to the many speaking invitations he accepts from community and church groups.

Dr. Woelk received his MD and family medicine residency training at the University of Manitoba.  Further training in palliative care and geriatrics was at the University of Western Ontario.
