New blog for Hospice Volunteers

Several members of our community here volunteer at hospices and palliative care units. I thought you might like to know about this blog started by Katherine Arnup:
 Katherine writes - "I have been volunteering in a residential care hospice for the past decade.  The work centres my life, reminding me of the things that really matter in life. Being able to be of service to people who are dying and to their families provides enormous meaning for me. What I sometimes miss is the opportunity to talk with other hospice volunteers about our work – not the specific details or confidential matters, of course – but the challenges and joys, the lessons, and the survival strategies. I hope this [blog] can serve that purpose."

 I have had a preliminary look at Katherine’s blog.  It is really well done.  I wish that I would have known about it years ago when I first  started as a hospice volunteer.  I would have been so helpful.  It still will be a great resource and I will read all of the back posts and comment on them. 

I agree wholeheartedly when she says, “What I sometimes miss is the opportunity to talk with other hospice volunteers about our work.”  This is so true because others (even close friends and family) cannot understand fully.  Also, we tend to hold things in rather than upsetting our loved ones.


 


Wouldn’t it be nice if somehow Virtual Hospice and Katherine Arnup could combine to offer a vehicle where volunteers, caregivers, staff and others could share tips, ideas, and emotions?  I can dream, can’t I.  Lol   - Michael

I've been blogging about healthcare research and my volunteer work for years. As has this volunteer. Neither of us are 'new!'
My blog features much current research and best practices. I've been finding it tough trying to share my information without hiring a publicist, but as a volunteer I cannot afford to put more money into this endeavour.

Katherine's is a more casual blog, intended for volunteers. There is growth in sharing our stories.
My hospice group has monthly meeting where we share trial and tribulations. It really helps, as professional caregivers, to share our stories, as much as family caregivers need ot share and look for support.
Burnout is a difficult thing and I have often taken a break between clients.
 This is the lonely path of the one-on-one volunteer, going into people's homes to provide respite to family caregivers. It can be draining. Far easier to work in an environment of support, I also volunteer in LTC and in retirement homes.

My oversight Jenn. Katherine's blog is new to me, but not newly started. Thank you for also pointing us to your blog. 

Does anyone know of other blogs dedicated to supporting hospice and palliative volunteers?
